Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I setup a Parent Account?
You can sign up for a Parent account using your laptop or smartphone. Video instructions can be found on this page.
What's the difference between Canvas and Infinite Campus? Do I need both?
Infinite Campus is our Student Information System (SIS). This is where official records are held - attendance, final grades, transcripts, health records, etc. Canvas is our Learning Management System (LMS). An LMS is where students and their teacher participate in online learning. They use Canvas to share links, videos, have discussions, submit electronic assignments, etc. Canvas will show you the online learning process, what's coming up, and what work has been submitted. Infinite Campus will show you scores of completed work - both digital and non digital. While we do encourage supporting your child in both Canvas and Campus, we recommend having Infinite Campus at a minimum. We also recommend having your child give you a tour of their classes in Canvas, which may look something like this on iPad or Laptop.
Help, I can't find my pairing code. What do I do?
Pairing codes are generated by your child. This ensures that your are signing up to be observing only your child. They generate this code by logging into Canvas on a web browser, not an app, and go to Account > Settings > Pair with an observer. This is explained in directions for on this page. For additional support generating a pairing code, please email empowered@isd197.org
How do I login to Canvas?
Parents log in at isd197.instructure.com/login/canvas
How do I change notification settings for my child(ren)'s Canvas?
You can do by click on your Account Icon (profile picture) > Notifications. There are four frequencies of notifications — notify right away, daily summary, weekly summary, or don't send. Notification settings apply to all courses you are observing; you cannot change settings for individual accounts. For screenshots, see this guide.
How do I add additional children to observer?
Each child will need to generate their own unique pairing code. The parent would then login and go to Account > Observing and enter this code.
How do I navigate the parent app?
The parent app will show you assignments, events, grades, and allow you to set notifications for student activity. For screenshots of this, click here. Please remember: grades in Canvas are unofficial since they may only represent what has been done digitally. Check Infinite Campus for official current grades.
